A "Photographing for Science" training course is being organized from November 18 to 21, 2025, in La Ciotat (Bouches-du-Rhône).
Organized by the Talent Development and Quality of Life at Work Department of IRD's Human Resources Division, the course will be co-hosted by Daina Rechner (head of IRD Multimedia's photographic holdings, IRD's audiovisual department) and Pascal Dumas (biologist and photographer, UMR Entropie).
Public
This training course is open primarily to IRD scientists (researchers, doctoral students, post-doctoral students) and IRD program managers, posted in mainland France or in representation, in a position to take photographs in the context of their research practices and fieldwork.
Non-IRD colleagues in the units will also be able to register, subject to availability (CAUTION: their mission and travel expenses will not be covered by the IRD - but the IRD will cover their accommodation and catering expenses during the training course).
The training group is limited to 10 participants.
Pedagogical objectives
Understand the importance and challenges of the scientific image.
Acquire practical and operational notions to produce striking photographs.
Learn how to produce quality photographs on a specific theme (landscapes, portraits, etc.).
Acquire basic post-production techniques.
Store and organize your photographic assets.
Share and promote your images at IRD.
Search for images in external resources.
Acquire the essential notions of copyright and image rights.

This training course is organized on a residential basis in La Ciotat (Bouches-du-Rhône), with the possibility of arriving on site the day before (Monday November 17 after lunch/dinner and overnight stay).
